Overall purpose of the role:

The Area Manager, who reports directly to the Country Director (CD) Tanzania-Burundi, is in charge of the overall coordination and strategic direction of DRC’s response in Kigoma. More than 300 people work with the DRC team in Kigoma. As part of consistent, high-quality communication to sustain positive relationships, the Area Manager will represent the DRC to local government agencies, the UN and foreign organizations operating there, funders, other stakeholders, beneficiaries, and other (I) NGOs.

The individual filling this position will contribute to the portfolio of DRC in Kigoma by guaranteeing the superior execution of all projects and fostering the growth of new ventures. In addition to fostering a learning environment for employees and the business, s/he will need to guarantee just, responsible, and transparent administration of the program and support departments.

Responsibilities:

  • oversee all programming in the Kigoma region while maintaining strict project cycle management standards, adhering to best practices and core protection principles, as well as DRC and donor requirements;
  • Create and assist in carrying out needs assessments to identify risks and vulnerabilities, such as those pertaining to gender, age, and diversity, and to guide program design;
  • Create targeted programs that address the needs of communities impacted by violence and particular tactics that capitalize on the population’s preexisting advantages;
  • Participate actively and continuously in strategic planning meetings, contribute to the creation of strategy papers, and help determine the strategic direction of programming.
  • Put into practice the program’s created vision for Tanzania, seek for possibilities, and communicate with partners and donors;

Safety and Security

  • Even if the Safety Focal Points will serve as the main hub for security and safety, take ownership of staff safety in the operational area;
  • Make sure that all pertinent data on security, safety, and the surrounding environment is gathered, updated, and sent on a timely and regular basis;
  • Work together to address security events locally and make choices with the Senior Management Team and the Regional Safety Coordinator.

About you

Qualifications and Experience

To be successful in this role, we expect you to be a positive, mature leader with a proven track record of developing effective initiatives, programmers, and impact.

  • a master’s degree in international development, the social sciences, law, or another pertinent discipline
  • a minimum of six years of experience working in the protection sector, preferably in the areas of humanitarian relief and refugee protection, and having previous experience working for a global NGO
  • three years or more of experience required for a senior project management role
  • outstanding writing and analytical abilities
  • outstanding English, both written and spoken
  • strong sense of initiative, self-motivation, and dedication to humanitarian ideals and collaboration.
  • the capacity to multitask and manage conflicting demands while meeting deadlines.
  • Determine which tasks and activities are most important, then reorder the list as needed.
