FIG Overview

The Financial Institution Group (FIG) is a vital department within IFC, responsible for approximately 40% of IFC’s business volume, profitability, and development impact. FIG operates in various sub-sectors, including Microfinance, SME, Gender, Climate, Insurance, Capital Markets, Housing, and Distressed Assets, providing both investment and advisory services worldwide. FIG Africa operates throughout the continent, with main hubs in Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa.

Duties and Accountabilities

  • Develop a strong portfolio of high-quality investment opportunities through proactive business development and sector/country knowledge.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with FIG clients, investors, arrangers, and key stakeholders.
  • Mobilize additional investors alongside IFC.
  • Engage with mid and senior-level clients to understand their business directions and challenges.
  • Lead investment transactions, incorporating lessons learned from previous investments and portfolio management.
  • Support upstream initiatives to address constraints to financial sector growth and inclusion.
  • Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close transactions, including portfolio restructurings, rescheduling, capital increases, and equity sales.
  • Develop innovative financial structures for complex transactions.
  • Mentor and coach less-experienced staff.
  • Coordinate with social, environmental, governance, and technical assistance colleagues to enhance client businesses.
  • Monitor complex portfolio projects, ensuring value addition and development impact.
  • Review and analyze clients’ financial and operating performance, prepare risk ratings, supervision reports, and strategy papers.
  • Supervise and ensure the quality of portfolio reporting information prepared by junior staff.

Selection Criteria

  • Education: Master’s degree in finance or a similar relevant field; CFA or CPA accreditation is a plus.
  • Experience: 10-14 years in the financial sector, with a solid operational understanding of commercial banks and other financial entities in Africa.
  • Networking: Established network of top-level contacts in the financial services and investment industries in Africa.
  • Skills:
  • Experience in identifying, evaluating, structuring, and negotiating private debt and equity investments.
  • Strong problem-solving and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects under time constraints.
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities and deliver high-quality work on time.
  • Strong client relationship and business development skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; French is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in multicultural teams.
  • Commitment to sustainable economic development.
  • Strong research, quantitative, and computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
