Job Title: Library Intern

The United Nations is seeking a passionate and motivated Library Intern to join our dynamic team. As a Library Intern, you will have the unique opportunity to contribute to the vital mission of the United Nations by supporting our library services and operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Research Assistance: Provide research assistance to United Nations staff, diplomats, and researchers by retrieving and organizing relevant information from the UN library’s extensive collection of resources.
  2. Cataloging and Classification: Assist in cataloging and classifying new acquisitions to ensure efficient access to library materials, adhering to international library standards and protocols.
  3. Reference Services: Respond to reference inquiries and provide information services to library users, including assisting with database searches, document retrieval, and bibliographic assistance.
  4. Digital Archiving: Support the digitization and preservation efforts of the UN library by digitizing materials, managing digital repositories, and ensuring the long-term accessibility of digital assets.
  5. Collection Development: Assist in evaluating and selecting materials for the library’s collection, based on the evolving needs of UN stakeholders and the organization’s thematic priorities.
  6. User Training: Conduct training sessions and workshops for library users on research techniques, database utilization, and information literacy skills to enhance their ability to access and utilize library resources effectively.
  7. Collaboration: Collaborate with colleagues within the library and across different UN departments and agencies to support interdisciplinary research initiatives and knowledge sharing.


  • Currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program in library and information science, archival studies, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in international relations, diplomacy, and global issues.
  • Familiarity with library cataloging systems, metadata standards, and information retrieval tools.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in research methodologies and database searching techniques.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team.
  • Fluency in English is required; knowledge of other official UN languages is an asset.
